This is an update on the shows that I watched throughout 2010 and what I’ll be watching for 2011:
Pretty Little Liars
Yes, this is a teen show on ABC Family (don’t judge me) that I got hooked on this past summer. I think a primary reason I watch this show is because it reminds of suspenseful teen shows of the past. It is definitely a polished show where most, if not all, of the characters are beautiful but it’s more complex than that. Each character has a treasure trove of secrets and inconsistencies which make it fascinating to watch.
Californication
Ah, the complexities of Hank Moody! The show is currently in it’s 4th season that premieres this Sunday 1/9. If you’re a internet fiend you know that someone leaked the first 2 episodes of the 4th season online already (yes, I did see them, no downloading required). If you haven’t indulged in this show already, hurry up and Netflix it. The characters of the show are pretty hilarious like Charlie Runkle, Hank’s best friend and Runkle’s ex-wife Marcy (played by the always hilarious Pamela Adlon, I can’t say I was ever a major David Duchovny (a little young to really pay attention to X-Files at the time) but this show made me forget he was even involved with that show. Yes he’s a womanizing, narcissistic, alcoholic borderline sex addict but he redeems himself many times within the show. Please keep in mind David is 50 years old now which really makes me chuckle at bit considering this role (a bit of a Daddy Cougar if you ask me…yes I made that up and I just said it). Just watch the damn show and you’ll see.
Dexter
I had to finally find out what all the fuss was about and watch it. I’ve heard more than an earful about Dexter through TV sites and friend recommendations but I somehow avoided it. I completed 4 seasons in 3 weeks and the 5th in a week. Without giving any spoilers, THERE IS MAJOR SHIT THAT HAPPENS AND IT’S AWESOME! All I can say is if you are on some moral high ground about vigilantes/serial killers then this isn’t for you.
Boardwalk Empire
Steve Bushemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson
Boardwalk Empire is a period drama focusing on Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson),[6] a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s. Nucky interacts with several historical figures in both his personal and political life, including mobsters, politicians, government agents, and the common folk who look up to him. The federal government also takes an interest in the bootlegging and other illegal activities in the area, sending agents to investigate possible mob connections but also looking at Nucky’s expensive and lavish lifestyle for a county political figure.
This dude is amazing. He’s signed to Terrible Records, founded by the guy from Grizzly Bear. He even produced this entire album. Listen to his full-length album, Forget, here.
I love this song and I hate that the Cadillac CRX commercial is using it. The track has a late 1920s instrumentation though it was released in 1999. The effect used at the beginning is to make the track sound like an old recording. It’s a charming song, enough to make Cadillac think so.
Amazing instrumental track from the people at Ghostly International. This was featured on a few bumpers used on [adult swim]. It’s melodic and yet it allows your mind to wander.
